Medical is Level 1 of Citadel Station and the first to be explored by the Hacker in System Shock (Remake).
Overview[]
This level contains the advanced neurosurgery ward (Healing Suite) that the Hacker awakes in six months after the Neuro-Implant healing coma. Medical contains one of only three functional surgery machines on Citadel Station where the Hacker is able to heal for free.
This level is separated into four quadrants:
- Alpha quadrant contains the restoration bay and CPU nodes, as well as some of the toughest enemies on the level.
- Beta quadrant contains a few offices, the medical research vault which has been turned into a radioactive trench, maintenance shafts, and one of two access points to Alpha quadrant.
- Gamma contains an emergency armory and various maintenance shafts, as well as the recycler.
- Delta is where the Hacker wakes up from a healing coma, and contains several multi-purpose rooms, including one with a Cyberspace Terminal, and contains an Elevator with access to Level 2 - Research.
Strategy and Goal[]
The medical level has only two goals, to destroy the 4 computer nodes in the North-East most corner of the map, and don't forget to write down the number on the monitors after note nodes have been destroyed (Reactor self-destruct code part). Access to the room with nodes can be granted after completing the cyberspace minigame in a room nearby marked with a bright yellow plaque. Destroying those lower the security level on this level and allow the player to travel to the next level - Level 2 - Research via the elevator located in the North-West corner of the main halls on the level. There's nothing else significant on the level to the story, although some access cards can be found to use on this and other levels as well.
The player may be forced to come back here many times for free healing and energy recharge instead of using consumables, as it's one of few levels where both healing station and rehanging station are present. This level is, also, home to the weakest enemies in the game, so player can also come back here to do the achievements requiring kills multiple units to get. There's many junk items to be found and salvaged on this level, as this would be the start of your the game, the player will have the least amount of items and the most inventory space available, it's be advisable to use that to players advantage to get as much gold coins as possible to avoid doing it on later stages of the game, when the inventory would be much less spacious. Around 300 gold coins can be easily farmed on the level, as well as on harder difficulties monsters will keep spawning, if the security level is high enough, and those can be farmed as well infinitively
