Background
Cortez and Frank Yang set up the transmitter in the basketball court on Deck 5 during the takeover of the Von Braun.
Cortez is the one who set up a makeshift graveyard beneath the Garden, which would later be seized by The Many.
Cortez was aware of the Viral Proliferator in the Crew Quarters, but did not know its whereabouts.
Throughout the takeover, Cortez was in contact with Dr. Delacroix.
In-Game
Cortez is one of the few Von Braun crewmen that the Soldier can meet directly. After exiting the lift on Deck 5, Cortez can be seen in the crew quarters, banging on the window and apparently mistaking the Soldier for Delacroix. He is chased off and killed by an Assault Robot.
His body is found just outside the door to the Crew Quarters near the elevator. He is carrying a Power Cell, presumably for restoring power to the basketball court's faulty circuitry in a final attempt to activate the transmitter.

- Cortez shares the same generic NPC model as most male characters in the game; as such, when he is encountered alive on Deck 5, he looks younger and has hair, even though on his profile picture he is portrayed as a bald, middle-aged man.
