Advanced models of robots contain self-modification circuitry and special Nanites stores for repair and replacement parts. After the Dubuque Autodoc Scandal of 2025, programmed fail-safes were implemented to prevent robots from "accidentally" generating new functionality such as weapons. Diagnostic/Repair Modules can still be used by hackers and other heavily modified humans for their own healing, leading to slash-and-run robberies of unaccompanied robots such as Protocol Droids.

It is heavily implied (through the nature of the Scandal's name) that an Autodoc began to generate weaponry that was either sold illegally or used by the Autodoc itself to harm/kill.
