The Cyborg Mantis (sometimes referred to as Cyborg Mantis Assassin or Mantis Assassin) is an enemy encountered in System Shock (Remake) and is a variant of the Cyborg Assassin. It is new to the remake and is not featured in the original game.

Overview[]

A Mantis is a gruesome meld of man and machine with two robot limbs replacing the human's arms at the shoulder joint. Unlike their Assassin counterparts they will lie in wait until spotting the player, then ominously march toward until in range to perform a leap-slash.

Strategy[]

Tactical Analysis[]

Despite their terrifying appearance, Mantises don't hit exceptionally hard, don't actually run at the player and aren't even noticeably tougher than the average cyborg. Any ranged weapon more powerful than a stock Minipistol or a Sparqbeam set to LOW power will easily put these hideous stalkers down.

Their low health pool and armor means that 9mm Standard rounds remain effective against them, while more powerful weapons such as the Shotgun or the Laser Rapier will often dispatch these enemies in a single application.

Their constant muttering while idle means that the player will most often hear them before they see them, albeit once aware of the player, the mantis will act slightly quieter and as such may sneak up on a distracted player.

Due to the fact that these enemies fight in melee range, they have a tendency to position themselves between the player and other enemies when fighting multiple threats. This makes the Mantis one of the best targets for friendly fire incidents.

Overall Strategy[]

These enemies aren't particularly dangerous once the player takes possession of any sort of firearm or a laser rapier. They're not particularly frequent nor are they deployed in large numbers, making them mostly a nuisance rather than a threat.

While they may drop some small amounts of ammunition, the sheer ease with which these enemies go down means that whacking them with the laser-rapier or shooting them in the head with an energy weapon is the most optimal solution to conserve and build-up ammo supplies.
